Some studios you only take notice of the physical place while others you only remember the people and “vibe”. KadiFit is one of the unique gems in Charlotte (Cornelius) that knocks it out of the park with both. When I came to Charlotte nearly a year ago I began following strangers on social media to try to acquaint myself with the areas fitness scene. It wasn’t long before I began following the Instagram account @kadifit which, at the time, I thought was just some badass girl doing fitness. Yes, KadiFit is a badass girl doing fitness, but it is also a badass guy and “Tribe” of people living a fitness lifestyle working out in a stunning studio in Cornelius.
Confused yet? Let me try to clear this up. KadiFit (pronounced KayDee-Fit) is a fitness studio started by Katie Dixon which focuses on everything from kickboxing to break-dance. Weird combo? Not at all. Try awesome combo. Katie is joined by her husband Mike Dixon who was my instructor for their PRIMAL class.
Lets me digress for a second and talk about Katie and Mike before we get into the workout. These two are like the cool kids in school who were friends with everyone including the nerds. They are both so honestly nice and emanating with positive energy you would be skeptical that this is real life. How does someone become this radiant and cool, doing what they love, making people healthy, all while looking like a model…how do they even exist? I haven’t had a ton of interaction with either of them prior to out #SweatDate, but I have been a follower of theirs on Instagram. Their happiness is disgusting. And by disgusting, I mean, it’s what everyone should want in a relationship. These two aren’t just in it for themselves. It is obviously they genuinely care about the community as they even take the time to support OTHER (what some would consider competitors) fitness events. I can’t think of a more encompassing way of saying that these two are just good humans.
So now take THAT, and put it into a fitness studio. Now take THAT fitness studio and build a community. Now take THAT and you have KadiFit. It’s more than just a place for fitness it is very literally a community of fitness with a studio location.
More confused than when I started? Yeah sorry I cant help it.
Let me describe the workouts. I took their “PRIMAL” class and it was really quite fun. It combined circuits with a little bit of body weight, a little bit of free weights and a little bit of kickboxing. It removed the tedious feeling you get from boot-camp style workouts because of the fun variety. Honestly, who doesn’t like punching a bag? All of this in what I would consider one of the prettiest indoor studio environments in the area and bumping music.
So then came the scary part. Katie asked me to stay for the next class which she was instructing which was a cardio dance. Dance is my Kyrptonite. Fortunately I had to go to work. Unfortunately Thomas told told Katie we had time to stay for 2-3 songs. Fortunately I loved it and it was amazing. Granted I still was certainly super awkward and moved like a robot – but this was just pure energetic fun. There was a point in the dancing where everyone just literally ran, skipped, hopped, twirled or whatever, around the room in whichever direction they wanted. I’ve never been in a mosh-pit before, but this felt like a non-contact version of one and it was awesome. I felt like a 5 year old again just having fun dancing in my pajamas.
I could sit here and write twenty pages about how cool and fun KadiFit is or how much you will enjoy it but I already feel like I am rambling. Don’t even get me started about the time Katie and Mike did car Karaoke (with song requests) on instagram. Anybody can survive the class. This isn’t an exclusive club, they will welcome you with open arms the second you walk in the door no matter your fitness level.
